Rats in the Basement – What to Do

A rat in the basement is almost never a lone wanderer. It means there is both a reliable food source and a usable route into the building.

In Zurich the route is frequently a defective drain, an open container store in the courtyard or a gap at foundation level.

Is this urgent?

Nests at entrances, rodents in food areas or a sting risk for allergy sufferers are treated as urgent.

First steps

  • Store food, animal feed and birdseed in sealed hard containers
  • Close container lids fully and keep the bin store swept
  • Note the times and places where you saw activity
  • Photograph droppings and gnaw damage

What to avoid

  • Placing poison bait yourself without knowing the routes
  • Blocking a suspected drain defect before it is inspected
  • Feeding birds close to the building while an infestation is active

How professional control works

We survey the building and surroundings, identify runs, entry points and food sources, then set up secured bait stations or traps positioned so children, pets and wildlife cannot reach them.

Monitoring continues until activity has stopped, and we tell you which structural repairs are needed – typically drain work or sealing at foundation level.

    Apartment buildings

In a shared building the cause is often outside your own unit. Report it to the property management early so the courtyard, bin store and drains can be inspected as a whole.
